Tales Vinyl Tells-”stories record albums convey”
Tales Vinyl Tells is my podcast that evolved into my radio show that airs weekly on RadioFreeNashville. I had quite a few LPs that I collected in the late 60s and 70s and I always knew the magic of the albums of that era of album-oriented rock brought back memories of times, people, smells, tastes and feelings. I hope it does for you too. Back-stories and album liner notes tie the tunes together. I’m your host Brian Hallgren and you should hear the Tales Vinyl Tells!

There are a lot of episodes that are wanting to be heard. Is that an “ego” desire? I don’t think so because the music of those decades speaks for itself. It’s unique (no boom boom boom), not repeating, its not about guns or crime. The music of the 60s and 70s is about peace, love, feeling good, money, Otis Redding (?). Just listen!
A couple things: First-you can now listen to Tales Vinyl Tells on StudioMillsWellness.com, Apple, Google and Spotify podcasts (whoohoo), anytime, anywhere; Second- Podbean is where the podcast is hosted and pushed to Apple etc. Their metrics (?) tell me that over 850 downloads of TVT have happened and that the leading country downloading is New Zealand. Whhaatt? Hello, New Zealand!! And thanks for listening! And Apple podcasts is where the majority of listeners go to hear Tales Vinyl Tells. This is an adventure and I’m glad you’re on it with me. Please subscribe where you can, email me at TalesVinylTells@gmail.com and share this! Let’s see those numbers rise! I am glad your tuned in.

Since this podcast is a replay of the live radio show on RadioFreeNashville, some have already heard it, listening live at 5 Wednesdays here and here. Thanks for the feedback! By the time I get to edit the archived version, most of the misfires and booboos are gone. Let me know if you find one. HaHa!
In this episode you’ll hear some Randy Newman (thanks Matthew), Spirit, Gerry Rafferty and some Marley and Marijah with two reggae tunes. Feel freee to share this page/link/fun.

To break away from the winter boredom, why not imagine a cruise around the Leeward Islands, from Sint Maarten down to Dominica and back up the east side of the chain and back to Sint Maarten, Home of Mary’s Boon Resort and the Princess Juliana airport, where you’ll land.
A lot of the tunes in this episode are very familiar, as you’ve probably heard them all over the radio for decades, but I’ve found great use for them. They fit in well for this adventure aboard a classic 4 masted clipper ship. After customs, we walk to the ship, up the gangway and get ready for this Caribbean Sea cruise.

Three good ones from Joni today. Her PBS tribute is March 31st at 8 central time. She recently was honored to receive the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. Mad Dogs are loose on the street today and I can only hope you’ll like my song choice today from some of the best LPs of the ‘60s and ‘70s. Thanks for your donations to the show and to RadioFreeNashville.org.

Many of the great LP cuts from the 60s and 70s were played here on Tales Vinyl Tells, hosted on StudioMillsWellness.com, before March 2022 when Tales Vinyl Tells got an hour slot on Wednesdays at 5 central time on RadioFreeNashville to carry on with the mission. Since my goal was and remains to not repeat too many tunes, except for replays of course, there are some killers that need to be repeated. Like, Jefferson Airplane at Woodstock. I love to hear Grace announce early that Sunday morning in 1969, “You’ve heard the heavy groups, now you’ll hear morning maniac music. Yeh, it’s a New Dawn……. Good morning, People!” and the Airplane launches into Volunteers (of America). Like, Joe Walsh and the James Gang, Thunderclap Newman and Revolution. Those last two were the first two played as a great progressive album rock radio station went on-air at Lake Worth beach, Florida in 1970 (?). That being WMUM-FM, lovingly known as Mother. And it was one. I loved my Mother and the people there that made it happen. Kerry Bogard, Pat Sullender, Bill Davis, Gil Colquitt(RIP), Galen Barker, Michael Weber, Tom Lane and the first guy on the air, Geoff Fox. If you listen to the Bill Davis interview, you'll hear how someone I know closely played Whole Lotta Love way before WMUM was born. (Smile)
Hope you enjoy all of them here. You can reach out to me at TalesVinylTells@gmail.com. The month of March I celebrate another year at RadioFreeNashville. 2023 is one year.

Many great artists, musical, theatrical, scientific and in other fields have made big marks in what we do here south of the border that we share. This is the first part of the series that brings out some of those great musicians who have made us smile, sing, dance, hug, kiss, you know. The musical list is quite long so I’ve chosen what I think should be played on such a classy show as Tales Vinyl Tells. I’ve warned you to not be surprised what you hear here, so let’s take off. The Guess Who, Lightfoot, Cohen, Adams, Mitchell, The Band are some who you’ll hear in the next two episodes.

We go back to a Love episode, in fact it’s #17, from August 2020. That was a time before Tales Vinyl Tells became a weekly radio show on RadioFreeNashville. You’ll hear here Janis, Sade, JJ Cale, Arthur Lee and Love (they are really good and have 2 tunes today) and there’s more. If you like what RadioFreeNashville does, thank you, and consider making a donation or give monthly. Hope your Valentine likes this edition of TVT.

The icons of the sixties are physically leaving us, one by one. My intentions are to keep their music alive. The music of the 60s especially was unique and many of the albums that contained those tunes have endured a half century or more, just begging to jump onto a turntable so the stylus can be gently placed into the endless groove and be played and appreciated. Or hated. There are so many songs I despise, even though they were great, they got overplayed on commercial radio. I’m trying very diligently to hold off on repeating any songs, though I feel some are so worth repeating. This is probably the 4th time I’ve played Wooden Ships but why not with such a great tune with Stephen Stills’ signature guitar solo and great lyrics that make you wonder about so much. I give this hour to Croz and encourage you to explore his compositions and especially his latest works, solo and with his son, James Raymond, guitarist Jeff Pevar in the group CPR. Enjoy!
I’m digging’ listening to the early podcasts!
